Rapid-Fire Memoir: A Personal Piece a Day

Presenters
Description

In the words of American humorist S. J. Perelman, “Keep it crisp.” If you haven’t got time for the pain of writer’s block, this is the workshop for you. Starting at our first meeting Sunday evening, each day we’ll get a prompt for a 250-500 word “micro” personal piece to write overnight—experimenting with memory-mining, perspective, and voice. We’ll also get a short published piece or excerpt to read, to energize and inspire us. The following day, we’ll share and workshop our pieces, and then move on to the next. I’ll also offer more comprehensive written feedback on some of the pieces, with suggestions for revision and expansion.

The goals here are to take creative risks, to write precisely and originally in order to make our stories come alive on the page—even just one page—and, as ever, to get over ourselves.

Nothing to submit in advance, as we’ll generate all new work during our time together. Open-minded introspectives with a desire to communicate, at all levels of writing experience, are welcome.

In this workshop, we will generate new writing through guided exercises and prompts; offer feedback/first impressions on writing you produce in our week together.
