Fearless Fiction: Three Steps to Move the Big Idea into Bold and Daring Prose

Presenters
Description

In this weekend workshop for beginning and intermediate writers, you will learn the three essentials on how to write fearless and engaging fiction that will not only captivate your readers but also help take you to the finish line with your novel. The triad is simple: learn how to develop a structure that supports your plot; create engaging, dynamic characters that will propel action; and refine your theme through world-building, metaphor, and foreshadowing. In-class lecture and discussion will cover topics such as understanding the four main universal themes, how exposition weakens character development, and the importance of time in organizing your structure. You will improve your craft through in-class writing exercises aimed at understanding why structure has little to do with plot, learning the five elements of creating characters your readers will never forget, and how to elevate your prose to develop your theme. A safe, supportive workshop environment is designed to help you generate new work or hone preexisting writing. All fiction genres are welcome.

In this workshop, we will generate new writing through guided exercises and prompts; offer feedback/first impressions on writing you produce in our weekend.
